Ray Allen – Shooting Drill

77-26117-JHere is a video of a great shooting drill! The video gives a great demonstration of how simple the drill is but also how effective it can be on conditioning players to be ready to catch and shoot. The video is courtesy of BreakthroughBball. The drill needs a shooter and a rebounder/passer. The shooter needs to make five consecutive shots in one line before moving to the next spot (The line meaning you back up a few feet in a straight line after making each shot; the fifth shot in each line is a three point shot). There are five lines at each spot and five spots on the floor: baseline, wing, center, opposite wing, and opposite baseline. If you miss a shot in a line, you start that line over. To simplify those instructions: five lines at each spot, five spots on the floor, make five consecutive shots to advance to the next spot on the floor; if you miss a shot, you start that line over. Enjoy the video and make this an off-season drill for your players to do on their own!

Book of the Week!

Beyond BasketballThis week the book I chose to share with you is Coach K’s book titled Beyond Basketball. A tremendous read, that is full of insightful philosophies on winning, success, motivation, and lessons that can be used every day both on and off the court. Coach K is obviously one of the most successful coaches in any sport at any level. I read this book a few years back and have taken advice from the book that I utilize not only in my coaching; but also in my everyday life! I know any coach will enjoy this read; but anyone looking to be successful and find ways to think outside the box should give this book a try.

Play of the Day!

bballHere is the 10th and final play from our box set. This is a simple play that can be very effective to get the ball into the post or to your shooter coming off a quick stagger screen. I should have the complete box set playbook posted for you at some point tomorrow!

Basketball Motivation

hoops_basketball_design_photosculpture-p153817193161152553z8wb9_400Here is a great video from Coach Mike Lee on motivation for players! Take detailed notes, find a workout partner, use music during workouts, and have a vision for where you want your workouts to take you. These are just a few of the examples Coach gives to his campers to get better and stay motivated!

Rising Stars – Philly Jam Fest

532703_509858569078679_1594604744_nAs I sit here getting ready to watch the NFL draft, I can’t help but think about how excited yet nervous these players who are about to be drafted are. Tonight at the draft is not a culmination of everything they have always been working for; however, it is big time gratification and acknowledgement that their hard work and dedication to their passion is starting to pay off! If they continue to make strides, their careers will blossom! This weekend at the Hoop Group’s Philly Jam Fest, high school players from all over the country will have a very similar opportunity. Sure they are not getting drafted into a professional league; but they are being evaluated by big time college coaches and for many of them, this is their time to shine! It is time for them to show what they have and leave it all on the court. Just like the NFL players waiting for the draft, these players are waiting for their opportunity to shine; will it be this weekend? My advice for the weekend for any of these players would be to leave everything they have on the court, play to their strengths, play within your team’s system (No coach wants to see you play one on one all game), lockdown on defense, stay humble, be a great teammate and leader, out-work your opponents, and enjoy this opportunity! Best of luck to all participants, can’t wait to catch the action!
